Victorino Makimkim is being honored for his involvement in the United States National Science Foundation’s Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), an international partnership of scientists and the governments of Canada, Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, France and the Unites States in exploring the Earth’s ocean crust on board the research vessel SEDCO BP 471.
A Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering graduate, Makimkim is part of the crew in charge of core drilling in the floating scientific laboratory.
He has shown his technical competence, courage and excellent decision-making skills especially during critical and crucial times He fostered and maintained morale among his drill crew while promoting international cooperation and understanding through his friendliness and willingness to share knowledge as well as learn from others. For these, he has earned the respect and admiration of international scientists and his superiors, rising from roustabout to derrickman, the highest position ever attained by a Filipino onboard SEDCO BP 471 – a one-of-a-kind scientific drillship.
Makimkim’s exceptional talent and spirit made him shine in a program which required open mindedness, flexibility and tolerance of those from different customs and background.
