Perla S. Vega

“Mother of Mothers”

Mother of MOTHER or the “Movement to Help Eradicate Rape and Other Female Abuses” has been the moniker of Ms. Vega since she founded the movement in 1999. As a community leader exposed to the plight of stranded household workers at the OWWA Center in Riyadh, Ms. Vega felt the need to equip them with self-defense skill as protection. Thus, MOTHER was established to promote preventive measures against harassment, sexual assault and other forms of violence against women.

In just two years, the movement has attracted international attention and spread like wild fire, with around 50 chapters established in Saudi Arabia alone. They regularly sponsor self-defense demonstrations and training for women OFWs and other interested parties.

Through her sheer resourcefulness and determination, the MOTHER Bill (House Bill 9397 and Senate Bill 1913) is now pending in Congress which mandates basic self-defense teaching for women.

Ms. Vega for the past 9 years, in an Assistant Secretary at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
