The Model Seafarer
“Hardworking, competent, reliable, possessed of exemplary conduct and a good influence to others.”
This tribute to Chief Officer Henry Rayos comes from his Captain in the Teekay Shipping Group fleet of 34 tankers partially manned by Filipinos. After serving for only two months as First officer, Rayos was swiftly promoted to his current position; a distinction that is not without some significance. He was not without some significance. He was the first Filipino to be promoted as chief officer in the company — a post that usually goes to Westerners.
On top of these achievements, Rayos is being honoured for leading the lifeboat team that rescued a lone man, a Korean, floating in the waters of the Strait of Malacca. Again, it doesn’t seem to coincidental that Chief Officer Rayos sighted the man himself together with the lookout.
