Gerico A. Canlapan is a photograph supervisor at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and for seven years at the Abdelikrome Internatonal in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Outside his work, he shares his knowledge and skills by becoming a member of the Lensbug Filipino Photographers Club and giving free seminar-workshops to members and interested Filipino workers who are comprised mostly of sewers, construction workers and drivers.
A good result of this knowledge and skills-sharing is that two participants became entrepreneurs by putting up a photo business in the Philippines. He also conducts mini-lectures at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital which are attended by doctors, nurses and medical educators on the use of the camera for medical purposes and needs.
Canlapan’s works, especially those that were presented in various group exhibitions in Riyadh, and lately, his one-man exhibit dubbed, “Bareface” have touched the hearts not only of his compatriots but also other expatriates living in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Most of his works have received critical acclaim and are well appreciated by Saudis, too. At the hospital where he works, recognition came in the form of a promotion as acting photography supervisor starting January 2005. Some of Calapan’s works are now collected in the form of a calendar and being sold in Saudi Arabia. All of its proceeds went the to the typhoon victims and the next round, for the Gawad Kalinga Program.
