Captain Romel Alcantara was at the helm of the Norwegian tanker, M/T Team Venus and was cruising the Atlantic Ocean on January 24, 2001 when a “Mayday” call was picked up from the Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) ship MV Star Admiral.
Unmindful of the cyclonic winds and 10- meter high waves, the full Filipino crew of Capt. Alcantara embarked on a rescue operation. They were composed of Joselito M. Magno, Rene A. Palacio, Roberto D. Cabahug, Tito C. Mejarito, Armando A. Samia, Restituto De Guzman, Zandro L. Vacal, Eduardo L. Sanchez, Noel B. Miembro, Ronnel D. Hernandez, Felipe A. Ujano, Pretextato B. Plameras, Edgar D. Cabunilas, Melchor T. Galang, Roger C. Baliad, Emiliano R. Santos, Nonito D. Tunguia, Giardino N. Lintag, Michael R. Tancinco, Roman P. Ramos, Agustin B. Solmeo Jr., Rori M. Zolayfar and Randolf B. Georsua.
They successfully saved twelve (12) Ukrainian seafarers of the ill-fated ship, who could only express extreme gratitude to the crew for such a selfless and heroic act.
